“Warrior Soldier”

by Joel Matulich

Chicken head bucket, shelved wings, headdress
manufacturer of a tribe once thought extinct.
They won’t accept my documents in Pomona,
though we share a difference.

Jagged fabric signed up to become a warrior.
But my plaid organism became a soldier.
I didn’t understand it then, polished and
routine— a 5.56 chambered urchin.
