“Downtime”

by Andrew Calin

_

Innocence lost in the name of country
Youth stolen for a hopeless cause
Insubordination an option only for the brave
The rest know merely suffering and famine
What foolishness will they demand of us now?
Laughter and horseplay pass the dragging time
But anguish always creeps back in
Does our adversary live too like this?
Do they embrace the destruction?
War and brotherhood must cross universal lines
Loyalty to each side bounds by unbreakable code
The totality of this place, though…is death
