Get Him Back_Peters

Title: “Get Him Back”
Artist: Sophie Peters
Medium: Oil and acrylic on canvas
Size: 16” x 24”
Artist Statement: I grew up in the south of England the granddaughter of war veterans on both sides of World War II and moved to New Orleans in 2017, where I met many wonderful US veterans. Veterans were my neighbors and friends and often subjects for my paintings. Learning their stories and experiences forever changed me. During 2020 I lived with my best friend who had also served in the military -her young nephew is the inspiration for this painting. As I saw him running about with a water pistol. I was reminded of the traumatic experiences he would likely endure if he follows the life path of my friend who had served. I was compelled to paint this painting after witnessing the January 6th events on television. I could feel that it was a pivotal moment in history and couldn’t stop thinking about my friend’s young nephew and what future was waiting for him.

Bio: I grew up in the south of England and moved to the USA in 2017. I have always had an obsession with color and conflict and I bring these two themes into my artwork. I like to use oil and acrylic paint to document and explore the people around me, particularly those touched by violence. I currently create art in Philadelphia, PA and frequently visit New Orleans and England as a citizen of the USA and UK. https://sophiepetersartwork.com/

Who We Are

Military Experience and the Arts, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose primary mission is to work with veterans and their families to publish short stories, essays, poems, and artwork in our biannual publication, As You Were: The Military Review, periodic editions of Blue Nostalgia: The Journal of Post-Traumatic Growth and others. To the best of our ability, we pair each author or poet that submits work to us with a mentor to work one-on-one to polish their work or learn new skills and techniques.

Our staff is based all over the country and includes college professors, professional authors, veterans’ advocates, and clinicians. As such, most of our services are provided through email and online writing workshops.

All editing, consultations, and workshops are free of charge. Veterans and their families pay nothing for our services, and they never will.

Under our Publications tab, there are more than two dozen volumes of creative work crafted by veterans and their family members as well as a virtual art gallery. Our blog posts feature short pieces that cover a wide range of opinion editorials, literary reviews, and profiles on veteran artists and writers.

Please consider spending some time navigating our site and reading and seeing the fine work of veterans and their families from around the globe.
