Military Experience & the Arts seeks talented, motivated individuals interested in providing veterans and their families with opportunities to express themselves in a growing network of online and in-person communities.

Applications for board, staff, and editor positions welcomed. New staff members, if succeeding previously appointed officers, will shadow their predecessors and take over in May 2015. Returning officers’ positions will renew on the same date.

A federally recognized, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, MEA began in college classrooms, helping student veterans figure out where they’re going by articulating where they’d been. A small, campus publication of veteran stories, poems, and artwork quickly expanded its reach to veterans from throughout the United States, including veterans of all generations. In 2012, the first ever Military Experience & the Arts Symposium, funded by a grant from the KY Dept. of Veterans Affairs, provided more than 130 veterans and their spouses with three, all-expenses paid days of workshops in creative expression and arts therapies. The community forged in that event has since grown, publishing more than six volumes of veterans’ creative works, leading a number of free, online writing workshops, mentoring dozens of up and coming veteran writers, and moving towards its second national event in Lawton, OK in May 2015.

The Veterans' PTSD ProjectWe hope to bring in new team members, volunteers, and most importantly, leaders, at the 2015 MEA Symposium. We invite applications and inquiries from individuals interested in any and all positions. Qualified, altruistically minded individuals who submit their applications along with innovative, realistic proposals intended to take MEA to the next level of veteran servicewill be reviewed by the MEA Executive Board and invited to informal, online interviews.

Who We Are

Military Experience and the Arts, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose primary mission is to work with veterans and their families to publish short stories, essays, poems, and artwork in our biannual publication, As You Were: The Military Review, periodic editions of Blue Nostalgia: The Journal of Post-Traumatic Growth and others. To the best of our ability, we pair each author or poet that submits work to us with a mentor to work one-on-one to polish their work or learn new skills and techniques.

Our staff is based all over the country and includes college professors, professional authors, veterans’ advocates, and clinicians. As such, most of our services are provided through email and online writing workshops.

All editing, consultations, and workshops are free of charge. Veterans and their families pay nothing for our services, and they never will.

Under our Publications tab, there are more than two dozen volumes of creative work crafted by veterans and their family members as well as a virtual art gallery. Our blog posts feature short pieces that cover a wide range of opinion editorials, literary reviews, and profiles on veteran artists and writers.

Please consider spending some time navigating our site and reading and seeing the fine work of veterans and their families from around the globe.
