Title: “An Oath Fulfilled”
Artist: Darren Lapsley
Size: 11” x 14”
Medium: Artist’s markers on smooth Bristol paper
Artist’s statement: “An Oath Fulfilled” is a deeply personal self-portrait created during a moment of intense emotional distress. As a combat veteran living with post-traumatic stress, I turned to art as a therapeutic process to explore and release what words could not contain. Using artist markers and pointillism, I conveyed the sensations of migraines, muscle spasms, and emotional exhaustion. The tears in the portrait evolve into stars and stripes, symbolizing the weight of service and the unseen cost many veterans carry. The green shirt reflects a once-worn uniform, while the removed cap suggests a warrior no longer in battle, yet still not at peace. A shadowed flag and the red ground beneath him represent the silent sacrifices of those still struggling or no longer with us. This piece is both remembrance and release. It represents a way to process pain, reclaim identity, and transform suffering into purpose. It is my story and my healing, made visible.
