“Krub: 82nd Airborne Paratrooper” | Jill Motovidlak
Title: Krub, 82nd Airborne Paratrooper
Size: Approx. 10″ x 10″
Medium: Mixed Media, predominantly wood, metal, and paperclay
Artist’s Statement: As a civilian artist with deep respect for the sacrifices and stories of service members, I created Krub as a tribute to the bravery and resilience of those who serve—especially my late father, Matthew W. Kildea, III, and his best army buddy, the late Kenneth L. Burke (affectionately known as “Krub”), both of whom served in the 82nd Airborne more than 60 years ago.
The idea for this piece originated from an illustration of a turtle whose shell resembled a parachute. This inspired me to carve a turtle paratrooper carrying essential supplies to the frontlines—ammunition, medical kits, morale-boosting packages from home, mechanical equipment, and even a propeller! While I took creative liberties with the attire and era, the core message of service and perseverance remains central to this work.
