Artist Statement: “The Tempest” (2020) is an abstract painting with acrylic on 11 x 14-inch canvas. It depicts the sudden, violent sandstorms that occurred in the Al Anbar Desert, Iraq. Though dangerous at times, these rare occurrences brought some guarantee of relief from threat. The work is also the artist’s reflection on the conflict itself.

Bio: Wayne David Hubbard is an artist, author, and educator in Virginia. His creative works explore experience, history, and culture. His Marine unit built and supported air base operations in the Iraq War.
